How did you find yourself working in sexuality?
I grew up in a very liberal household, so I have always had an open mind about sex and sexuality. When I started university, I wanted to study psychology and graduated undergrad with a BSC in psychology. During undergrad, I became even more intrigued by the psychology of sex and then decided to pursue a masters in counselling therapy. At this point I knew I wanted to become a sex therapist. My first job was at a couples therapy center. I love helping individuals and couples to understand their underlying issues and coach them to a healthy sexual life that is pleasurable and free from any concerns.
What is the best part of the job?
Seeing individuals and couples realize their full sexual potential. To have my clients experience complete sexual freedom and understand their issues and concerns is the most fulfilling part of my job.
What is the most challenging part of the job?
Dealing with individuals who are not ready or motivated to change. Or a couple where one person is willing to fully engage in the therapeutic process, while the other person is reluctant or unwilling to fully engage.
What is your most important piece of advice that has the potential to revolutionize relationships?
If I have one, it would be that monogamy is not the only way to engage in a relationship. I would also advise individuals to learn about who you are as a person before embarking on a relationship. Another piece of advice would be for couples, don’t lose yourself in your relationship, make sure you maintain your individuality throughout.
What do you do to decompress and take care of yourself given that you spend so much time helping and caring for others?
I love to travel when I’m not working. Being in a different place, a different time zone, really helps to put life into perspective. I also love hanging out by the pool on my days off. Usually after a long day of seeing patients I like to relax in a bath with scented bath salts.
What do you want people to know about your work as a relationship counsellor and psychosexual therapist?
Being a relationship counsellor and psychosexual therapist does not mean I have the perfect relationship. They only benefit to my relationships is that I have a bit more insight than the average person. My work is extremely rewarding, but it is also incredibly draining and can take a toll if I don’t practice healthy self-care.
Where can we learn more about your work?
I see clients (individuals and couples) at my practice in Atlanta, Georgia. I also have an online presence for counselling and workshops. I do speaking engagements all over the country and internationally. My social media is @relationshipandsexdoc on Instagram, Therapyforu on Facebook, or people can email me here.
I am currently writing my book entitled The Sex Files: Confessions of a Sex Addict which will be out in Spring 2020.
